Mutti's Lentil Soup Recipe

Mutti’s Lentil Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 pound of dry brown lentils

3 medium size potatoes peeled and diced

1 Suppengrün (soup mix?) – cut up onion, carrot, leek, kohlrabi

1 cube of vegetable stock

4 german style beef sausages or as many as you like

250 gram (35 oz) Speck or Dörrfleisch see pic

Cover lentils overnight with about 1cm (2 inches) of water above the lentils to soften them. Drain water the next day.

Put lentils in a big pot and cover with water about 15cm (6 inches) above the lentils. Add some salt, vegetable stock and Suppengrün as well as the Dörrfleisch. Bring it to a simmer – never boil!!

About ½ hour before lentils are soft – which is when they still have a bit of a bite to them, add the potatoes as well as the sausages. Take the Dörrfleisch out and cut it up, then put it back to the soup.

San Francisco is one of my favourite City in the US - besides New York of course! I love coming here and I never get bored.
Today is Thanksgiving in the US, one of the most important bank holiday in this country. Besides a few seedy drinking holes and Starbucks most restaurants, shops and museums in town are closed, except in Chinatown, where business is as usual.

Here are 10 things you should do when visiting this fantastic City - besides the obvious touristy things.

Start the day with a hardy breakfast at an American Diner
Hire a bike, cross the Golden Gate Bridge, continue on to Sausalito, have lunch at Scoma's and then take the ferry back to San Fran.
Visit the California Academy of Science at the Golden Gate Park.
Make your way to the Top of the Mark bar of the Intercontinental Hotel around sunset. The view is spectacular and the 100 Martinis menu is a reason in itself.
Then walk down the Hill to Chinatown and have dinner at the cheap and cheerful House of Nanking or the more upmarket but equally delicious R&G Lounge
Check out the more alternative neighbourhood of Ashbury Heights for some groovy second hand shops and organic restaurants. If Thai food is your cup of tea then Thep Phanom is a must at Lower Heights
Beach Blanket Babylon is an institution in this city. It's an outrages musical revue in its 34th year. Lots of colour and movement and lots, lots of laughter is garanteed - a must do!
Afterwards make your way to Amelie, a wine bar on Polk Street. Great selection of wine, great food, great atmosphere, great neighbourhood crowd and very friendly service.
At some stage you will end up at Union Square. Why not stop at Scala Bistro for a "Three Martini Lunch". A cool $50 will snag you all the necessary supplies: Caesar salad, grilled flat iron steak with "Cafe de Paris" butter and pomme frites, a small dessert and -- as promised -- three martinis :)
Last but not least. Just walk around and discover the city for yourself - you won't be disappointed.

The Winner is ... The Wild Boys

Yesterday I went to see a play called The Wild Boys which was absolutely brilliant.
I wasn't sure what to expect. I read up on the story line and I knew it was presented by the Australian Theatre of the Deaf and that Alex Jones and Alexandria Wailes, who I personnally know were part of the cast.

The performance totally blew me away. In all about four words were spoken. The performance was a combination of universal sign language and physical performance. Anyone could have understood what was going, which I thought was extraordinary. The play was not carried by one actors performance alone, but by the whole ensemble (total of 4) and the music accompanying was simple, yet effective.

The play is on until the 29th November. A must see.

Today is Halloween. I don't believe it would make any difference to us Aussies. It's more of an North American thing.

Actually the other day I had a chat with DutchieKiwiAussie about Halloween. She told me that the kids in her neighbourhood will be trick or treat' ing. Last year she was ill prepared, but this year she wanted to make an effort without having to spent to much money. My word of advice was "Don't give them [kids] to much and go to Aldi for your supplies."

I thought to myself 'Thank God/Allah or the one who shall not be named, I don't have to worry about these things here in the big smoke'

Around 4pm today someone knocked at my door . My face was a Kodakt moment when I opened the door or maybe it was Master Card - priceless. Anyhu there they were, six little munschkins- kids that is!
Three of them were dressed as little fairies, one as Superman, one as Spiderman, one was wearing a George W Bush mask - he didn't look as scary as the fairies.

Imagine the dialogue as followed:

Kids: Triiiiiiick oooooor Treeeeeeeaat?

Me mumbeling: SHIT!

Kids: Triiiiiiick oooooor Treeeeeeeaat?

Me: Trick?

One Fairy: Trick???

Me: Yeah, Trick!

Superman: But we want Treat!

Me: But I don't have any Treat!

Another Fairy: No treat? Nothing?

Me : No sorry guys , I don't have anything. Not even gum.

I tell you what, you should have seen the disappointment in their little dark eyes - except George W Bush, I couldn't really see his.. It almost broke my heart

Oh well, such is life, sometimes it just does its own little thing.

However, I believe, Yes We Can make a difference in life and next year I'll make sure I'll have some Treat at home.

Kylie and I go way back when I lived in London in the late '80. Kylie back then was Charlene in Neighbours and I was struggling through one of those endless drab English winters. She was my daily highlight at 6pm on the BBC and she got me lost to "Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi" and "Locomotion" at Heaven nightclub.
We sort of lost touch when I moved to Canada - nobody knew Kylie in Canada back then. None the less we reconnected again when I came to Australia in the early '90 and we haven't left each others side ever since. I've seen multiple concerts of hers with my camp sister Michael. I even met her on a flight once. I came out of the First Class toilet and she went in after me, to fast for me to warn her....

What's your Inner Demon?

Cats! To be honest I am not a big fan off cats - they just make me sneeze. On the other hand I strongly believe that my Inner Demon is a cat, a LeOpard to be precise. I can truly identity myself with most characteristics of a cat. I love their independents and freedom. They do as they wish and can only be tempted by the prospect of food. At times I wish I would be as flexible and athletic as most cats - specially being able to lick my own balls sounds most fascinating. Cats have it really worked out for themselves and only the fact that they can't open a can of cat food, makes them just that little less supirior.
It seems I am not the only one on 888DAG attracted to cats. Just read the posts of Kym of the King and her cat Max or Off the Hoof and The difference between cats and dogs - very funny. The cat is also a popular image used in blogs - Feelion, Off the Hoof, Furball and myself have some sort of cat as a profile image.
So what's your Inner Demon? Or should I ask. What is it with 888DAGgers and Cats?

Greetings from Hong Kong - Tian Tan Buddha

In all those years of traveling to Hong Kong I always wanted to see the Tian Tan Buddha which is the largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha. Now I had no excuse as it is very close to the Regal Airport Hotel were I was staying last time I was in town. I took the shuttle bus from the Regal to Tun Chung - if you are coming from Kowloon take the MTR to Tun Chung Station. From there a cable car takes you on a beautiful ride with spectacular views up the mountain. Once on top you'll find a little theme park, shops, cafes etc and its only a short stroll to the Buddha. I would also recommend to check out the Po Lin Monastery nearby. The main temple houses 3 bronze statues of the Buddha representing his past, present and future lives as well as many Buddhist scriptures. You will also find people do offerings and prayers.

A special day

Yesterday was a very special day. It was Miss M's 1. Birthday Party - daughter of DutchKiwiAussie. Going back 12 months ago we weren't sure if we would see Miss M 1. Birthday at all. Miss M was born pre-mature and when I saw her at the hospital she looked so tiny and fractile, in a crib connected to tubes. DutchKiwiAussie's pregnacy was anything but easy, especially at the final stages where she had to be hospitalized and wasn't aloud to move. In order to save the live of mother and child, birth had to be induced. It was a worrying time. But never the less hope, trust and believe was all Miss M's parents had. Therefore yesterday was a very special day and I'm proud that I was able to be part of Miss M 1. Birthday Party and I look forward to many, many more to come.

Greetings from Sydney - playing Tour Guide

Yesterday I had a friend visiting. Debbie and I used to work together in Toronto 17 years ago at the Royal York Hotel and haven't seen each other ever since. Thanks to facebook we touched base again just a few months ago.
Debbie was on her away from Vancouver to Wellington, NZ and had about 7 hours spare in Sydney. So what do you do if you have only 7 hours in Sydney.
We started off at Mr Ts City Pat in Potts Point and Debbie was blown away by the view :) We then went along Victoria St, took the stairs down to Woolloomooloo, passed Harrys Cafe de Wheel, which is a Must Stop and famous for its Hot Dogs and Pies, mmmh and continued towards the Royal Botanic Gardens. I Love the RBG for its spectacular view of the City and Harbour, its diversity of plants and trees and the fruit bats hanging of trees - such interesting creatures. Once passed through the RBG, there it was, the Opera House, world famous and surely one of the most photograhed structures in the world - we took at least 10 pix! Debbie then took the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, which is another Must Do and a great way to explore the beautiful Sydney Harbour. She went to see her 80 year old Aunt for lunch and it turned out that her Aunt has not been to the City side for 24 years - bless. I picked Debbie up from Circular Quay 3 1/2 later and drove her to the airport where she caught her connecting flight to Wellington. I hope next time Debbie visits I will have more time to show her around.

Why am I in the doghouse?
Well, I don't really know, but I sort of have my suspicion. It has to do with me and Mr.T being 888DAGgers.

I'm not to sure what to do next. All my calls and sms have been unanswered.

What is it I would like to say to my friend?
I would like to explain to my friend that 888 really just means giving Safety to all the World's people, Access to the basic necessities of life and supporting a culture of Inclusion. That is what 888 is all about and as an 888DAGger I strongly believe that we can make it happen.

Will I change my behavior because people don't understand the 888 philosophy?
No, but I will try to find different avenues that hopefully will make people understand.

I hate Jet Lag

I know, hate is such a strong word and I don't like using it, but I just hate jet lag. Often I get asked how I over come jet lag. The fact is I don't! There are many different theories of how to minimize the affect of jet lag, and I believe it depends on the individual. Personally I haven't after all those years of being an International Kat found a cure - and trust me I tried it all. I can be as tired as a dog(?) and fall a sleep, only to wake up again three, four hours later - usually around 2 or 3 am. It takes about three nights until I get a good night sleep.
Well, I already feel much better now that I have vended my hate and the sun has come up. There you go and who knows, I might have a great night sleep tonight - fingers x.

Day ?? - I lost count

Well it's time to say goodbye to Amsterdam. We had a great time and
were extremely lucky with weather. It rained for two days, which we
spend in the halls of the IBC conference anyways, the rest of the time
it was sunny.
The visit was most productive and we are coming home with lots of
fresh ideas and innovations - and lots of shopping too (watch this
space!)
We are both now on a train to Frankfurt. Mr.T will continue the train
ride to Zuerich, while I will get off and hopefully get a seat on the
next flight to OZ - all flights are full :(
Fairwell, Goodbye, Aufwiedersehen Amsterdam. See you next year.

Day 6 and loving Amsterdam

We arrived yesterday in Amsterdam after a relaxing train ride through
the beautiful country side of Germany and Holland.
The suprise was great when we opened the door to our favourite hotel
room 68 - where we stayed on our privious visits - it was completely
renovated. Not only that, but we loved the renovations too. Besides
a new color scheme, soft furnituring and brand new bathroom it also
features a flat screen TV, Wifi, downlights, a spectacular chandelier,
more cupboard space and air con - Gr8!!
None the less, we ventured out straight away to hire a couple of bikes
for the week, drink a few beers, sample some of the delicious food and cake and soak up the atmosphere.
It's gr8 to be back. Not only is AMS a beautiful city, its the people
and their way of live that make this city such a special place.
LeOpard very happy!

Day 4 - Mr.T and Mutti bonding

Day 1 - Mr.T meets Papa

We finally made it. It tooks us 32 hours door to door from OZ to ze Vaterland - where is Scotty when you need him ??
Unfortunately we had to endure being in Coach all the way through and as you can imagine the Kat was not happy!! Fortunately enough the Cabin Crew felt for the Kat and Mr.T and spoiled us rotten - 'Would you care for some Champagne with that sleeping pill?'
All 30 odd hours were forgotten once we went through customs in FRA and saw Papas happy and excited face. It didn't take long for Mr.T and Papa to have a joke at the Kats expense - I know, I`m such an easy target. Meanwhile I`m writing this post, both of them are doing Yoga. What the...??
Needless to say once we got to Papas place we got fed with, yes you guess it right, Cake - did I mention it was 7.30am? Followed by a proper German breakfast - with different kind of bread rolls, meats, cheese and Leberkäse. And that was only the beginning of our Gourmet Tour of Deutschland.

Going on a European Holiday!

The day has finally come. Mr.T and I are going on holidays - if you can call visiting the folks in Germany and going to a trade fair in Amsterdam a holiday.

My idea of a holiday is not having to see an aircraft from the inside let alone flying in it for 20 odd hours, hanging around airports and staying in hotels - sounds to much like work to me. I have tried contacting my friend Scotty to beam us over - how fabulous would that be, but to no avail.

So reluctantly I went to get the tickets today, 18 hours before we are about to leave. I still haven't packed, but even worse neither has Mr.T!! Mr.T is to busy at the moment with putting little stickers on things - don't ask!

We are heading tomorrow to Frankfurt via Singapore and Adelaide - Ade.. what? EXCACTLY! But with lots of luck we will be doing it in Business Class - Champagne here we come. We have a 5 hour transit in Singapore, which we will probably spend in The Qantas Club, thanks to Mr.T's life time membership - how handy :)

Once we arrive in ze Fatherland, folks and friends will treat us like Kings!
"Finally we are meeting ze boyfriend."
You can be guaranteed that we'll be fed until we explode. Fois Gras anyone?

After Mr.T has endured everything that comes with the Kat, we'll head to Amsterdam, by train, along the Rhine River - noice.

Room 68 of the Ambassade Hotel Amsterdam is were we reside - its a gorgeous Hotel and it will be our third time in that room ...

After a week in Amsterdam it's time for me to come back home. Mr.T's travels will continue to Geneva, London, New York and finally San Francisco - all in First Class of course thanks to an endless amount of freakenflyer points.

Meanwhile I'll be flying for work to San Fran as well to meet up with Mr.T - just in time for Folsom Street Fair :)

I know, life sucks!

Like I said, my idea of a holiday is not.....

Greetings from Manila

I just got back today from Manila this morning. I had 25 hours there and enjoyed it. My first impression was mixed and I think I have to go back again to get a better understanding of the place - there is only that much you can expierence in such a short time.
You see everything in Manila, from people washing themselves in the street gutter to a Imelda look alike, being chauffeured around in a big 'n fat Bentley.
The people are very friendly, always having a smile on their faces. The local food was delicious - I did indulged myself with some crispy pig knuckles - mmmh Kat liked verly much. And the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel, where I stayed, is also known for it's excellent Buffet. Food, Food, Food - I love it.
I had a great time with my colleague Pen who is from Manila and showed me around the place. She me took for a fantastic massage - no, not the one you are thinking off. In our cab rides from one place to another Pen entertained me with some fantastic stories about life, love and the universe - you rock girlfriend.

Btw the picture above is of a Jeepney. There are hundreds of them in Manila and they all look different.

Shopping it in The Hood - Bondi Road

The other day I had a conversation with my friend Megan about shopping. Call me a mall-rat, but I usually do all my shopping at Westfield Bondi Junction, which is only 10 minutes walk from my place.
Megan however does her shopping in 'The Hood' on Bondi Road, which is 5 minutes walk from my place, and she tries to avoid WBJ at all cost. Megan prefers the local feel of Bondi Road and likes the idea that she is supporting local businesses.
Inspired by this thought I decided to give it a try and I have been shopping in The Hood for the last couple of weeks and I have to admit that 'I like it', preferring the village-feel to the mall-feel.
The local butcher next to the Post Office has a great range of organic meats, poultry and eggs as well as superb sausages (verly important).
Next door is the Russian Deli with a vast range of European delicacies, and the sales assistants Russian accent only adds to the charm of the place.
Then there is Kemeny's with a great selection of wine and groceries.
Accross the road is a fantastic Fruit and Veg shop and further down the road you will find a brilliant fish shop called The One That Got Away. And I don't want to forget to mention the beautiful flower shop next to the chicken place.....
To sum it all up, I'm hooked - I love the feel of it, the slower pace, the fact that you bump into people you know and of course the personal service you receive.

Schlampis best EVER Winter Soup/Suppe

Ingredients:

Roasted Vegetables, which must be leftovers from the Roast Dinner the night before, including

Purpel Sweet Potatoe
Red Sweet Potatoe
Beetroot
Carrot
Swede
Parsnip
Garlic
Caramelized Leek
Corn
Fungi

Vegetable are scrubbed, not peeled. Then tossed and roasted in the following mix of

Lemon Juice
Pure Sesame Oil
Chilly Oil
Olive Oil
Left over wine
Almonds
Rosemary
Salt & Pepper

the next day add Chilli and then blast Roasted Vegetables in a Pressure Cooker twice! until Pressure Cooker whistles.

Blend

Add some Continental Veal Frankfurters - LeeOpards favorite

Add some green Veg such as Snap peas

Springle with Maggie Beer Vino Cotto

Voilà, the best Winter Soup EVER made by Schlampi!

This time the hot Spaniels won the Tour de France. To be precise Carlos Sastre won, beating Aussie Cadel Evans by a minute in the overall Tour de France. I wonder what will be next for Spain. I'll keep you posted.....

Shopping in... Bangkok, Siam Square

Bangkok is a shoppers heaven. Your shopping experience will stretch from local outdoor markets to big air conditioned shopping malls. If you only have 24 hours in town I would recommend that you base yourself at Siam Square. You will find quite a few shopping expierences such as Paragon, Gaysorn (Gay what?), MBK, Siam Center, Discovery Center, Zen and Underground Market to name a few.

Paragon, Discovery and Gaysorn are the more upmarket malls, catered to the "Label Queen" amongst us, who can't do Bangkok without Gucci or Prada. However on the two top floor of Gaysorn are a few fabulous Home Decorating Stores and a great selection of Top Thai Designers which are worth a visit (if your figure is more on the petite side of life).

Next door to Gaysorn is the Underground Markets, ideal if you are after cheap souvenirs or copy items such as handbags, shirts, DVD's and watches. MBK however is 'the place' for copy items, all 8 floors of it. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the location of UR NEAREST EMERGENCY EXIT, it's a maze!!! And don't forget to bargain hard!!

Siam Center and Siam Square is the place where young shoppers meet. You will find a lot of shops and stalls with locally designed fashion. They have very groovy and trendy stuff on offer. Personally I'm a bit to old for most of it - or maybe not :)

In between shopping you definitely should try some of the local cuisine. There are lots of places to eat, but my recommendation would be the 'Intra'(diagonal of the Novotel Siam Square). As far as I am concerned, Thai food doesn't get better than that. It's tasty, it's cheap, it's cheerful.

And to finish off a hard day of shopping, spoil yourself at the lavish THANN Spa at Gaysorn or have a relaxing foot massage at Lek, which personally is my favorite.

Hey Markus, wo wie was,wo bist Du,wie geht es Dir,was tust Du.

Bist Du irgend wo in der Welt unterwegs.Ich werde morgen mal anrufen.

Bin grade aufgestanden,es ist 6 Uhr,15 Grad keine Wolke am Himmel,soll aber heiß werden.
Gehe aber gleich noch mal ins Bett.
Mit meinen zwei Damen hier wollen wir heute grillen.
Jutta hat mich heute zum mittag Essen eingeladen,ihre Mutter u. Bruder kommt noch.
Wir Grillen erst abens.
Der bessere soll gewinnen.Die Deutschen fahren alle Autos über 100000 was sollen sie
sich noch anstrengen.
Wie geht es Dir ohne Auto´?.Bei den Benzin Preisen bestimmt gut.Hir kostet der Liter 1,60.
Es haben schon viele zu knabern.Soll ja noch steigen.Bis jetzt sind die Autobahnen noch voll.
Es kommt so richtig kühle Luft in die Wohnung.Hau mich wieder hin.
